Cill Replacements at Sheerness Broadway
This building right in the middle of Sheerness town centre was having it's regular 5 year paint job on it's sash windows carried out, but there was an issue – over half of the cills were as rotten as a pear!
The corporate body who looks after the building were panicking that the whole windows would need to be replaced. During my site visit, I pointed out that although some of the cills and lower sections were rotten, the rest of the woodwork on the sashes and box frames were actually nice and solid, and free from rot.
So they took us up on our suggestion to carefully cut out the rotten components of the sash windows, including the cills, and manufacture some replacement timber cill sections. We would always recommend Hardwood, when replacing the cills – they are the parts of the box sash window that is most prone to face weathering issues, since the water runs down the panes and collects there.
After all the rotten woodwork had been removed and replaced with new hardwood cills, the sash windows were left rot-free and were left to the building company to give them a sand down and a few protective coats of paint. The result – these beautiful sash windows were saved, and will yet see many decades to come! Phew!
