Painting sash windows is an old art that is traditionally seen as a rather laborious task. Some enjoy it, most hate it - we don't mind it so much! Since 2006, we have prepared and painted an uncountable number of box sash windows - Kent and London.
Box sash windows are usually painted in situ, but since our sash repair and restoration work always involves dis-assembling the windows, you may find it logical to consider getting them painted at the same time, which is a service that Kent Sash Windows offers, see below for more info.
Since this work is carried out whilst the sashes have been removed from their frames, the benefits of this service are numerous, and include the following:
- Significant cost savings by not needing scaffolding, particularly on upper floor levels, since we dis-assemble the sash windows.
- A more thorough finish is achieved because we can access the usual hard to reach areas of the windows when the sash windows are out from their frames.
- A smoother, better finish is achieved because we can strip, sand and paint the sash windows with a lot more ease and comfort on our workbenches, rather than having to do this whilst they are in their frames.
- We can avoid typical problems that decorators face, such as sashes sticking to box frames and paint getting on draught seals, because we decorate sashes while they have been removed from their frames.
- We can use the quality, traditional oil based paints that take longer to dry than modern water based paints, because we have a lot more flexibility with drying times, achieving a much longer lasting result.

The method of our box sash window painting service is summarised as follows:
- Carefully dis-assemble sash windows and prepare all woodwork of sashes and frames - this involves stripping away all loose, flaking paint and sanding back good existing paint to achieve a smooth finish.
- Replace all missing or failing putty and properly seal between wood and glass.
- Apply tough wood filler to any holes/ cracks and carry out any minor timber repairs.
- Apply primer, undercoat and top coat paints to sashes and frames, lightly sanding in-between coats.
- Re-assemble sash windows back to working order with new sash cords and draft-proofing.
- Carry out a final touch-up and ensure all areas of frames and sashes are fully decorated.
